Full circle to me speaks of holism; viewing everything and everyone you come in contact with as whole persons. Not merely spiritual beings or physical ones. Not only “per capita’s” of GDP’s or objects of humanitarian aid. In my short 22 years of life, if I have learned one thing, it is that nothing is black or white and hardly anything is cut and dry. We live in a world of grey where tension and balance is the universal language we speak as we attempt to walk the fine line to salvation.
So if we are whole persons, why do we approach issues such as economic development as if the quality of human life at stake can be measured by one’s socio-economic status?
In our world of limited resources and ever increasing need, I feel the ever pressing need for sustainable solutions and mutually benefitting relationships. International development is looking toward local solutions to solve chronic problems and I feel an odd affinity for anything circular: recycling emblems, peace signs, you know…the World. Reciprocity, sustainability, renewal, full circle, whatever you want to call it, I’m in search of it; and my search has brought me to the Dominican Republic.
